MAH CET 2014: The directorate of technical education (DTE) has decided to reintroduce the ‘MAH-MBA/MMS-CET’, the common entrance exam for admissions to management institutes in the state, from academic year 2014-15.

Last year, all admissions to the MBA/MMS institutes in the state were carried out on the basis of the scores in the all-India Common Management Aptitude Test (CMAT) conducted by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), which regulates technical education in the country.

However, the CMAT has drawn a relatively low response from management course aspirants in the state compared to the CET that was being conducted by the state government. This was also reflected in the noticeable drop in the admissions to MBA/MMS courses at institutes across the state. Representatives of management institutes have since been demanding the reintroduction of the state CET.

According to a notification released by director of technical education Subhash Mahajan, 85% seats in the government-run and aided MBA/MMS institutes in the state and 65% seats at private unaided and minority institutes will be filled through the ‘MAH-MBA/MMS-CET’ from 2014. Another 15% seats will be filled through the all-India quota, the notification added.

The all-India quota refers to students who appear in the nationally recognised tests, such as the CAT conducted by the IIMs, JMET conducted by the IITs, MAT conducted by the AIMA, XAT conducted by the XLRI, and ATMA conducted by the AIMS. Students who appear for the CMAT will now be allotted seats at institutes in the state through the all-India quota, the notification said.

While the DTE is yet to decide the date of the MAH-MBA/MMS-CET 2014, sources in the directorate said that it is expected to be conducted in February 2014. The DTE has created a special webpage on its portal – http://www.dtemaharashtra.gov.in/mba2014 – to provide updates about the CET.

For 2013-14 admissions, the DTE had declared an overall admission capacity of 46,245 seats in the 419 management institutes across the state, including 404 private unaided institutes. All these seats were to be filled on the basis of the CMAT score.

However, almost 50% seats remained vacant as the DTE received only 20,757 applications from MBA/MMS aspirants. This had triggered concern among the management institutes. One of the main reasons, according to representatives of these institutes, is that the CET conducted by the state drew a larger response compared to the CMAT.

In April, the Supreme Court had ruled that the AICTE’s approval was not required for MBA courses and this prompted the institutes to ask why the state should abandon its CET in favour of the CMAT, thereby affecting admissions in the state. The move to reintroduce the state CET had since been under consideration.

Directorate shall conduct the CET for MBA/MMS Admission 2013-2014
